In short its shit. Overlords strengths are twofold: its a slightly above average power fantasy and the dynamics between Ainz and his underlings are fun to watch.
This movie manages to miss the mark entirely on both fronts. The vast majority of the story focuses on the usual cardboard cutout characters introduced as part of a new arc. Neia is a plank of wood. No characterization no likability no charisma. Just an empty vacuous plot device that exists for Ainz to have someone to talk to in his limited scenes. If you expect to learn more about her other than the fact that shes good at archery and she wants to follow in her mothers footsteps then youre going to be disappointed. Weve reached the point in anime where people working on a major popular IP feel 3 sentences in a throwaway scene by a character we never even see again are enough characterization for what amounts to the deuteragonist of the story.
The other supporting character introduced is Remedios a shouty angry rude insolent mean twat with perhaps the worst case of resting bitch face in all of anime. Im not sure what the point of this character is exactly. Shes right to doubt and be suspicious of Ainzs motivations as his intentions are exceedingly obvious. So it seems like the goal was to make her as unlikable as possible in order for the viewer to continue being okay with Ainz going full genocidal maniac? Who cares.
Albedo and Demiurge are barely in the movie and have almost no scenes with Ainz. So in essence the movie boils down to 2 hours of generic boring dialogue between Ainz and Neia and Remedios being all angry and shouty. What exactly is supposed to be enjoyable about that?
The overarching plot is the same thing youve seen over and over again. Antihero manufactures crisis that only he can resolve so as to win over the favor of the people. Theres no political intrigue theres no tension because we know Ainz is invincible there is no attempt to make you care about the fate of the people that will be ultimately affected by the plot. In summary its the same old Ainz is super smart and powerful and everyone else is braindead and weak slop youve gotten used to. To top it off there is a random ass side quest that takes up a solid 20 minutes that is even more trite and insufferable than the main plot. This sort of thing isnt as egregious pacing wise in the normal serialized format but there are different rules when you make a movie. If you just stitch together 6 episodes and call it a day you get this a sack of terribly paced garbage.
The art and animation is the same mediocre standard as the rest of Overlord. If you expected or hoped that a theatrical release would mean a bigger budget and more effort put into it youd be wrong. There are essentially only 2 action scenes in the entire 2+ hour runtime of any note and theyre both insipid and uninspired.
Dont bother wasting your time with this one.
