As disappointing as the previous movie was this movie is that much more impressive. With this movie Given returns to its roots by exploring themes like healing trauma and connection through music the very things it does best. At its core Given has always been about Mafuyus journey toward healing. This movie begins with our main character at one of his lowest points. Haunted by the loss of his late boyfriend Mafuyu is afraid to pursue music uncertain about his future and terrified of being abandoned. He feels as if everyones moving forward and hes being left behind a feeling thats painfully relatable especially if youve ever been a teenager. However with the support of his friends and through his own inner growth he finds the courage to take a leap of faith. The emotional payoff in this movie hits especially hard. Uenoyamas desire to help Mafuyu find his voice again gives their relationship so much weight. Its not about rescuing someone from their pain its about walking alongside them through it. And the new song feels like a turning point. Not just a performance but a release of everything Mafuyu has carried. And the sea imagery throughout adds so much melancholy. It captures that feeling of floating between who you were and who youre becoming. The moral of the story is that despite the hardships it will be okay. You may not feel ready to move on but you still have to. It will be different but it will be okay. Mafuyus journey is quite a realistic one and this final installment of the series feels very satisfying. Each character seems to have arrived at a place of emotional peace. Could it have been better? Absolutely. Mafuyu and Uenoyamas relationship for example leaves the audience wanting more. Although they were the main couple of the series at times it felt like their relationship could have benefited from more screen time. In my opinion a scene where Uenoyama directly confronts Mafuyu about his past was really needed. The fact that he found out about Mafuyus past through Hiiragi and never brought it up even though he knew Mafuyu was struggling felt like a strange choice on the authors part. One thing I also wish wed seen more of was Akihiko and Haruki. I get that their character arcs were mostly wrapped up in the first movie and their development is pretty much complete but I still found myself missing them. I also wish we had spent more time with the band Given itself rather than focusing so much on Hiiragi and Shizusumis band with Uenoyama as support. I understand that Uenoyama choosing to pursue music professionally made this necessary for his growth but I do wish he had stayed more involved with Given. It left a bit of a bittersweet feeling seeing that our band wasnt at the center of the final chapter. But these dont affect my overall enjoyment of the movie that much. This has always been a comfort series for me and Im very satisfied with the conclusion of it.
